kolam

Kolam is an ancient ritual form of art of South India

that has a thousands years history and still is practiced nowadays in the same way: the performers (usually common women) draw dots and lines to compose patterns on the floor, pouring some rice flour with two fingers.
The important thing is the act of making them because the ephemeral drawings won't last long time as people will regardless eventually step on them.

I came across kolams while travelling there many years ago and I was so intrigued by it that I've learned it a bit and researched and [ collected material ] about from that time on.
arteam3/ I hope that one day I'll make a book out of it, but in these very days (october 2010) I've been asked to participate to an exhibition of contemporary art that some artist friends will have in my hometown padova the next december.
The main theme given as title is winter solstice and as kolam are made mainly during this period it would make them fit perfectly.

So I'm going to produce some of those pieces of art using the traditional technique but instead of doing it on the floor I'll do it on paper, using historical photographic materials and methods (handmade photographic coated paper directly exposed to light > photograms), so keeping a sort of negative memory of the already vanished patterns.

che ha una storia di migliaia d'anni ed è ancora praticata nello stesso modo al giorno d'oggi: i performer (solitamente donne comuni) semplicemente tracciano punti e linee per comporre disegni per terra, spargendo della farina di riso con due dita.
La cosa importante è l'atto del farli, perché gli effimeri disegni non durano nel tempo, visto che la gente alla fine li calpesterà senza riguardo.

Mi sono imbattuto nei kolam mentre viaggiavo da quelle parti diversi anni fa e ne fui così colpito da impararne un po' e da quella volta in poi ho ricercato e [ raccolto materiale ] relativo.
Spero un giorno di farne un libro, ma proprio in questi giorni (ottobre 2010) mi è stato chiesto di partecipare ad una mostra d'arte contemporanea che alcuni amici artisti terranno a Padova il prossimo dicembre.
Il tema principale che intitola la mostra è solstizio d'inverno e dato che i kolam si fanno soprattutto in quel periodo ciò li rende perfettamente adatti.

Perciò produrrò alcune di queste opere usando la tecnica tradizionale ma invece di farlo sulla terra lo farò su carta utilizzando materiali fotografici e metodi storici (carta fotografica preparata a mano esposta direttamente alla luce > fotogrammi), conservando così una sorta di memoria in negativo dei disegni ormai svaniti.
